Listening...

Numerous times in scripture, we read the words, "Let the one who has ears...hear!" We read it so often that all too often, we allow our eyes to slide right past those words to what comes next. I invite you to stop and think for a few minutes. Most, if not all of us, have ears. They hang on the side of our head. They are there for all of us to see.

Yet the reality is not many of us really "hear." We don't listen to one another. We don't really listen to what is going on around us. We are surprised when we hear stuff. We just don't take time to really engage the comprehending part of hearing. Yes, we hear the sounds of stuff, but we don't really "hear" and connect with our heads and our hearts.

Jesus invites us to "hear" his words to us. He invites us to engage his message of love and hope at a deeper level. Listening to the word of God means that we engage his message at a personal and life changing level. The problem is that we have too much going on to really listen. We have busy schedules, TV, internet, ipods, car stereos, hobbies, pressures, bills, static, and all other kinds of stuff to occupy our thinking moments. So we really can't hear.

If we are really going to get in close to God, we need to throttle back our stuff and allow God the space that we need to speak to the deep parts of our hearts. The pay off is that as we focus on listening and allowing God to speak to us, we connect to his heart. We find ourselves becoming more like Jesus. He speaks to our needs and calms our fears. We hear his words inviting us to enter into his peace and rest.

Let me invite you to experience God in new ways by creating the time to hear his voice speaking into your life.
